Anneliese Dodds appointed new shadow chancellor

The Labour Party has announced that Anneliese Dodds has been appointed the shadow chancellor in Sir Keir Starmer’s new shadow cabinet.

Dodds, MP for Oxford East, will succeed John McDonell in leading Labour's shadowing of the Treasury, and becomes the first female shadow chancellor.

Starmer comfortably defeated Lisa Nandy and Rebecca Long-Bailey in the party’s leadership contest over the weekend in a ballot of party members and supporters.

Other appointments in the 57-year-old’s new shadow cabinet include leadership hopeful, Nandy, who was announced as shadow foreign secretary, and Nick Thomas-Symonds as shadow home secretary.

Labour also revealed that Angela Rayner had been elected deputy leader, replacing Tom Watson, who stood down as an MP before the General Election in December. Rayner will also become chair of the party.
