Greg Clark appointed new Housing Secretary

Greg Clark has been appointed as the new Housing Secretary, the government has confirmed.

He replaces Michael Gove who was sacked by Boris Johnson last night as the Secretary of State for Levelling Up, Housing and Communities.

Clark, an MP since 2005, has served in the cabinet before having been Secretary of State for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy between July 2016 and July 2019. His appointment is one of several changes across Johnson’s replacement cabinet announced today, following a raft of resignations across the Conservative party in the last 48 hours.

Chancellor Nadhim Zahawi, who was given the role two days ago, this morning publicly called for Johnson to resign, saying the situation was “not sustainable and will only get worse”.

Johnson has confirmed his resignation as leader of the Conservatives in a statement outside Downing Street but intends to continue serving as Prime Minister until the autumn, to allow a Conservative leadership contest to take place in the summer.

This is despite calls from a growing number of Tory MPs as well as Labour leader Keir Starmer for the Prime Minister to quit immediately.
